Magnesium Horse and Animals
Magnesium for your animals
Like humans, animals also depend on a sufficient supply of magnesium. The human and animal bodies are not able to produce this important nutrient themselves. Magnesium must therefore be supplied daily through food. With high-quality food, your animals are usually well supplied. However, there are exceptions.
Animals as Contributors
Farm animals and pets must meet high performance requirements. In order to reduce stress, it is important to always ensure that they are adequately supplied with macro and trace elements, especially after exceptional stress. Magnesium, along with calcium, is an important mineral component and plays a particularly important role. (1)

Magnesium for active and demanding animals
Magnesium works together with calcium to ensure that the muscles and nerves are working to their full potential. While calcium is primarily responsible for muscle contraction, magnesium acts as its antagonist and provides the necessary relaxation. This is why active dogs, such as sled dogs, rescue dogs and police dogs, should be given more magnesium during periods of high performance.
Magnesium for Sport Horses
The same applies to sport horses. They have an increased need for magnesium. The mineral has been proven to relax horses. The essential mineral regulates the transmission of excitation in the organism. The administration of magnesium can reduce stress during competitions and transport. Many experts also give magnesium when breaking in growing horses.
Magnesium for livestock
Studies show that a moderate supply of magnesium improves the stress tolerance of pigs and turkeys. If you keep your animals in a species-appropriate manner and also provide them with sufficient magnesium, you can reduce the animals' aggressiveness, which can lead to dominance fights.
More serenity: Magnesium can help anxious animals
Animals with nervous nature become calmer and more relaxed after long-term magnesium administration. The transmission of nerve impulses is positively influenced by the natural stress brake. Magnesium stabilizes the nervous system and ensures a relaxed muscle state.

Magnesium deficiency in horses
Symptoms of magnesium deficiency in horses
Magnesium deficiency / magnesium requirement horse when recognizing
A deficiency in this key mineral can also lead to illness in horses. Bone components of the dynamic horse skeleton are broken down and reproduced every day. If there is an undersupply, demineralization can occur. Magnesium plays an even more important role than the well-known calcium. A deficiency can impair the quality of the horse's skeleton, which can quickly lead to injuries.
These symptoms could indicate a magnesium deficiency in the horse:
- nervousness
- Digestive problems with recurring colic
- Dark, too hard horse manure
- lack of motivation
- tension
- Jumpiness
- muscle twitches
- Heavy sweating during exertion
- Reduced performance
Magnesium supplementation can counteract the symptoms mentioned above. We recommend having a blood test done by your veterinarian before administering magnesium.
Magnesium deficiency in dogs and cats
Symptoms of Magnesium Deficiency in Dogs and Cats
Detecting magnesium deficiency / magnesium requirements in dogs and cats
The dog's body cannot produce magnesium on its own. It must be supplied. This usually occurs through food. Transdermal absorption, i.e. absorption through the skin, is explained further down in the text.
Magnesium deficiency (3) in dogs can manifest itself in the following symptoms:
- Increased nervousness
- listlessness
- Reduced muscle tone
- The dog's recovery phases take longer
- behavioral problems
- Reduced performance
A sufficient supply of magnesium keeps your four-legged friend healthy and can prevent the development of diseases (4).
Detecting magnesium deficiency in cats:
Deficiencies also occur in cats. The consequences, similar to those in dogs, are increased nervousness, listlessness and behavioral problems.
Magnesium, Nutrients and Energy
The energy source
Magnesium for Animal Health
This essential nutrient influences the elasticity of animal bones (7) and teeth and, together with calcium and phosphorus, builds up the bone structure. The majority of it is stored in the skeleton. Giving magnesium increases the animal's bone density. So anyone who relies solely on calcium to build bones can harm the animal more than is generally assumed. Calcium needs its counterpart, magnesium.
energy source magnesium
Magnesium is an important component of energy metabolism (2) that the body cannot produce itself. A low intake of magnesium can lead to reduced muscle activity and reduced performance. The starting point of energy levels in humans and animals is the cell, which contains the nucleotide adenosine triphosphate (ATP) as an energy source. The mineral acts together with potassium in the cell as an enzyme activator: it helps ATP to activate enzyme-dependent processes. The more performance the animal performs, the more ATP, i.e. energy, is used. In order to replenish the stores, the body then needs more magnesium. (6)
Magnesium in BARF
Supplementation during BARF
While a suckling puppy or kitten absorbs enough magnesium from its mother's milk, a magnesium deficiency can occur, especially at the beginning of BARF supplementary feeding. BARF is known as a healthy form of animal nutrition, but animal lovers cannot avoid dealing with the adequate supply of minerals and vitamins. In many cases, a short-term magnesium supplement over a few weeks is sufficient to keep the animal healthy and to provide it with sufficient nutrients. If you supplement magnesium for at least eight months, you can compensate for an existing deficiency in the organism.
Magnesium oil for your horse, dog, cat
How do I use magnesium oil on horses and animals?
Magnesium oil for animals
Magnesium oil is the transdermal form of magnesium chloride. The valuable nutrient penetrates through the layers of skin and reaches the blood and organs. It is not an oil in the traditional sense. It owes its name to its oily consistency. Basically, it consists of nothing more than water and magnesium chloride. Due to its high magnesium content, it is not suitable for oral consumption.
Veterinarians, alternative practitioners, osteopaths and physiotherapists have long been aware of this form of administration and are happy to recommend it. There is a specific reason for this: Because the animal's digestive tract is bypassed, it is not affected by magnesium. This is particularly advantageous if the animal has a healthy digestive system but is struggling with other problems that could be easily treated with magnesium.
Using magnesium oil also means treating your pet to a little “wellness”. It is usually combined with a massage, which relaxes muscles and tissue. This in turn has a positive effect on the animal’s nerves. More on this in the next point.

How does your horse and your animal benefit from magnesium?
Magnesium Horse and Animal Effects
To relax stiff muscles
In many cases, animal lovers combine spraying the body with a massage. This not only supports the already increased absorption of magnesium due to the transdermal form of administration. The massage loosens stiffness and tension from the outside, the magnesium oil penetrates deep into the organism and relaxes muscles and nerves from the inside.
This is a blessing for both healthy and sick animals. For animals that have been through a lot of exertion, it is THE method of choice to gently support the transition from the active phase to the relaxation phase.
Magnesium oil for pain and injuries
The valuable mineral can be sprayed onto the affected area in case of pain or injury. The organism absorbs everything it needs through the skin. The natural mineral salt is completely harmless when licking the wound. The pain-relieving effect does not occur immediately. At first the animal only feels the cooling effect. Depending on the animal species, fur density and skin condition, absorption takes at least half an hour to two hours. Regular spraying also has an anti-inflammatory effect. It can therefore also be used without hesitation for regeneration after operations.
Magnesium for your horse
performance improvement, refreshment and relaxation
Magnesium – a gift for your horse
Demand
Basically, a horse needs up to 12 g of pure magnesium daily. This requirement can increase to up to 20 g for sport horses or those pregnant or lactating. If this intake through feed is not possible, an additional application of magnesium oil can cover this requirement very well.
Refreshment for your competition horse
Do something good for your horse after a period of intense performance. Spray your animal generously with magnesium oil. This is not just for the time immediately after a tournament. Give your horse a break during the tournament break and use the spraying with additive- and doping-free magnesium oil in combination with a massage as a kind of wellness treatment.
Increases the horse's performance in a legal, natural way
The medication regulations in equestrian sport rightly prohibit performance-enhancing substances. The use of prohibited substances and medication is investigated by medication and doping control and punished with exclusion.
What is meant by the term doping and which active substances are not permitted can be found in the FEI Equine Anti-Doping and Controlled Medication Regulations (8).
The administration of magnesium does not fall under the doping regulations and can therefore be administered to sport horses without any concerns. Find the anti-doping list here. (9)
Physiotherapy for Horses
Many well-known and successful physiotherapists massage horses with magnesium oil. In special cases, the animals are sprayed with magnesium oil and then “bandaged” with kinesiology tape.
Magnesium for small animals
Also for our little ones
Magnesium for rabbits, hamsters etc.
Rabbits, birds, ferrets, guinea pigs and hamsters: they all benefit from a little wellness treatment just like large animals. Cage keeping and socialization are known stress triggers that can be alleviated by spraying with magnesium oil. Don't just spray into the cage, but spray each animal individually outside the cage. Make sure to avoid eye contact. We recommend spraying "from behind".
Magnesium Oil Application Horse and Animals
How do I use magnesium oil on horses and animals?
Magnesium oil application in horses, dogs and cats
The most effective way to quickly correct magnesium deficiency
If your pet has been diagnosed with a magnesium deficiency, a combination of oral and transdermal intake is the best way to quickly correct the deficiency.
Regular spraying with magnesium oil does not harm even healthy animals. Its administration in such cases is simply a health plus.
use in animals
Animal physiotherapists and osteopaths recommend the following procedure: Spray your horse, cat or dog until the coat is slightly moistened. Since magnesium oil is not an oil in the traditional sense, it does not leave a greasy film on the coat. Massage the oil into the skin, provided there are no external injuries, and simply leave it on the skin. Brushing the remaining oil out of the coat after drying is possible, but not absolutely necessary.
The advantage of magnesium oil
Absorption through the skin bypasses the animal's digestive system. This is particularly advisable when food intake and digestion are functioning well. In precisely these cases, the animal owner should reach for the spray bottle so as not to disrupt a sensitive, well-functioning system.
Thanks to the high magnesium content in the oil, a deficiency can be compensated for transdermally within around two months (compared to eight months when consumed). An overdose is practically impossible. The amount of substances not needed is excreted through the kidneys.
