What exactly is MSM? What is the difference between sulfur and MSM? What role does the small molecule play in the human and animal organism? The abbreviation MSM stands for methylsulfonylmethane. It is an organic compound made up of the elements sulfur and oxygen. That's why MSM is also called "organic sulphur". MSM is the compound in which sulfur occurs naturally in all living organisms: humans, animals and plants. The synonym dimethyl sulfone reveals that the MSM molecule consists of two methyl groups and one sulfur atom. Methyl groups are necessary building blocks for muscles, bones, enzymes, hormones and some neurotransmitters in humans and animals. Every second, millions of methyl groups are transported into your cells and incorporated there. Methyl groups are also involved in detoxification of the body via the liver. Incidentally, the sulfur compound methylsulfonylmethane has nothing to do with sulfur that is added to wine. And beware: do not confuse MSM natural sulfur with MMS (Miracle Mineral Supplement). In short: MSM is a natural sulfur compound that is used in a variety of processes.
History of Sulfur
From the sulfur of antiquity to the MSM of today
Sulfur has been used by man since ancient times. The Chinese and Egyptians used sulfur as early as 5.000 BC. The Ebers Papyrus describes how treatments were carried out with the help of sulfur. In addition, sulphurous medicinal springs have been used for thousands of years. Even today, treatments with sulphurous medicinal water are prescribed as a cure.
The MSM known today emerged from its precursor dimethyl sulfoxide – DMSO for short. In 1867, Russian scientists discovered the substance and described it in a German journal. In the 1970s, DMSO was approved as a drug for joint problems in dogs and horses. In 1978, it was used in the United States as a drug to treat a rare urinary bladder disease in humans. DMSO has been the subject of numerous international symposiums; more than 12.000 scientific papers on the biological applications and more than 28.000 papers on the chemical properties have been published.
However, DMSO was never a popular drug because it tastes bitter, smells pungent and causes skin irritation. In the late 1970s, Professor Stanley Jacob at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland was researching the natural metabolites of DMSO. It was already known that MSM is the main metabolite of DMSO. Dimethyl sulfide reacts to MSM via the intermediate DMSO. About 15% of the DMSO ingested is converted to MSM in the liver. Presumably, the effect of DMSO was due to MSM. MSM is much easier to use because it is stable, odorless and does not cause skin irritation.
For a long time, MSM was restricted to use in animals and cosmetics. Since the 1990s, the Food & Drug Administration has also approved MSM as a dietary supplement for humans. Since then it has been popular with people and animals, with breeders and owners, for ingestion and rubbing. Why is OptiMSM® currently the only MSM recognized by authorities as safe? First of all, you need to know how MSM is created: hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) reacts with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO); the result is methylsulfonylmethane (DMSO2) - MSM for short - and water (H2O). In order for DMSO2 to become a food, the MSM must be separated from the water and byproducts after the reaction. At this point, the crucial difference between OptiMSM® and other MSM on the market arises.
Crystallization: dangerously high pollution levels
Anonymous manufacturers of cheap MSM products usually separate the MSM from the water by crystallization: the solution is cooled and the MSM forms crystals. At this point, the MSM molecule can trap contaminants from the water: mercury, cadmium, lead, fungus, yeast and bacteria - all dangerous pollutants that enter your body with the MSM product and can be harmful to your health. MSM cannot be reliably purified by crystallization. It is often difficult for the consumer to understand whether and to what extent raw materials and end products are examined in the laboratory. Supposed certifications should be critically questioned: Are the awards independent and credible? Play it safe and rely exclusively on recognized DIN standards and official certifications.
Distillation: pure and safe OptiMSM®

Distillation takes advantage of the different boiling points of MSM, water and impurities: the solution is heated to 238 °C, because at this point MSM turns into steam. Impurities in the form of organic compounds evaporate before MSM, heavy metals only evaporate at much higher temperatures and thus remain in the distillation column. The evaporated MSM cools down and forms crystals that are almost free of harmful contaminants. This process is repeated several times; with each pass, the MSM crystals become purer than before. The end result is OptiMSM®, which is considered the purest MSM in the world.
Laboratory tests show that there are practically no impurities in OptiMSM®; the amounts are so small that they are barely measurable. The product is described as 99,9% pure. A look through an electron microscope shows that MSM that has been "purified" by crystallization has clearly visible residues of heavy metals and other contaminants. Many people rightly ask themselves whether modern foods can still cover the body's nutrient requirements. Many types of fruit, vegetables and grains are overbred. Not only ready meals, but also supposedly natural foods such as cow's milk are often highly processed. Long transport routes reduce the content of sensitive vitamins. MSM occurs naturally mainly in foods containing protein, but also in fruit, vegetables, coffee and tea; the highest concentration is found in breast milk. Cow's milk also contains MSM, especially when the cows are grazing in the pasture.

Taking methylsulfonylmethane (OptiMSM® Organic Sulfur) is safe and free of side effects. Even a moderate overdose carries no risk of side effects. The body excretes the excess of the substance. There are also no known habituation effects. To date, there have been no sufficient studies on possible side effects of MSM, nor are any side effects known. To be on the safe side, you should stick to the official recommended consumption of 1 mg once a day. Studies have shown that combining it with vitamin supplements is beneficial.
Kontraindikationen
So far, there is insufficient knowledge on how MSM affects the unborn child and the quality of breast milk. Therefore, it is currently not recommended to take methylsulfonylmethane during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you are taking medication or other active substances or have a medical condition, ask your doctor whether you can take MSM organic sulfur. Methylsulfonylmethane should also not be consumed by people who are hypersensitive to shellfish or suffer from glucose intolerance.
