OPC - an overview
The abbreviation stands for oligomeric proanthocyanidins - secondary plant substances that belong to the flavanols and thus to the superordinate polyphenols. They are found not only in the grape seed, but above all in the leaves and skin of red grapes, in coconuts, gingko leaves, apples, the bark of maritime pine and the red peanut skins. Jack Masquelier dealt with the latter in 1948 when he investigated the possibility of using the membranes as fodder. He did a whole series of animal experiments. He discovered the positive effects, especially on vein diseases. He identified and named the relevant compounds – OPC. There is a high concentration of OPC in the seeds in particular - and thus of antioxidants, which is what makes the grape seed so interesting.
There are currently no reliable studies that scientifically prove the effect of OPC - so we cannot make any specific statements about health effects. However, the high proportion of antioxidants suggests that OPC can neutralize free radicals. The balance of anti- and pro-oxidative processes in the body is immensely important to avoid damage to cells. Overloading can lead to oxidative stress, as can alcohol, nicotine or environmental toxins. A healthy diet that contains the most important antioxidants, namely vitamins C and E, carotenoids, flavonoids and other secondary plant substances, is all the more important. Fruit and vegetables, legumes, high-quality vegetable oil, nuts and whole grain products are particularly suitable. In addition, the minerals zinc, copper, selenium and manganese contained in fish, eggs and meat play an important role in enzymatic defence.

Both the Premium OPC Grape Seed BIO Premium Capsules and the OPC Grape Seed BIO Premium Powder contain only grape seed flour. The biodynamically grown grapes in Switzerland are not only demeter certified, they also meet the criteria for the BIO seal. So you can be sure that neither pesticides nor chemical plant protection products were used in the grape cultivation - this is how we understand the premium quality of a Swiss product that is laboratory-tested and vegan and also completely free of GMOs and gluten.
The grape seeds, gently ground in the Steiner Mühle in Emmental, naturally have a high OPC content, namely 100 mg of all oligomeric proanthocyanidins per gram of flour from the grape seeds. This makes our products significantly different from many others: we grind the grape seeds and do not obtain the OPC in the course of an extraction, so neither water, chloroform nor ethanol are used in the production. The result: pure grape seed flour with lots of OPC, but practically no grape seed oil. In order to guarantee the high quality of the products, we analyze the natural grape seed flour, which is also available in vegan capsule shells, at regular intervals.

Side effects of OPC from the grape seed are not yet known, as it is a natural plant substance that is generally well tolerated. But here, too, there are no studies over a longer period of time. Caution is generally required if you are allergic to grapes or red wine or have an intolerance. Then please consult your doctor first, just as you would if you were taking blood thinners.

Even if the need can easily be covered with apples, nuts or dark chocolate in relaxed phases of life, this is often not enough, especially in the case of illness, stress or heavy workloads. Your body can process nutrients more efficiently if you take them on an empty stomach - preferably in the morning before breakfast. Then avoid dairy products for a while to make it easier for your body to absorb the active ingredients.
