How much iron does a person need?

The European Commission for Food Safety (EFSA) officially recommends an average iron intake of 14 mg per day. A balanced diet that regularly includes dark green leafy vegetables, meat, oatmeal, whole grain products and berries usually covers this requirement. However, the actual requirement depends on many individual factors, some of which increase it so much that good food alone is no longer enough. A diet low in vitamin C can also be problematic, because vitamin C helps the body absorb iron in a crucial way!
