Zinc – effects and daily requirement

It is essential, it is vital. The trace element is only stored for a short time, normally 2-4 grams are found in the body. Zinc must be supplied again and again through food, as the human body cannot produce it itself. The continuous supply of zinc is important. The human body not only stores little of this valuable trace element, it is also difficult to mobilize stored zinc.

Zinc in dietary supplements

Optimal care

Zinc – an overview

The mineral zinc is a trace element and is a component of various enzymes in the human organism. Enzymes enhance certain processes in the human body or enable them in the first place. Zinc is a trace element. This means that it is only found in trace amounts in the organism. However, this does not reduce its importance.

Zinc is found primarily in meat, seafood and fish. Oysters in particular are considered to be very rich in zinc. The levels in eggs and cheese are also considerable. Of the plant-based food sources, oat flakes, lentils, soybeans, nuts, green peas, wheat bran and sunflower seeds in particular contain the valuable zinc. The phytic acid present in raw plant-based food components can hinder the absorption of zinc. High amounts of calcium, iron, copper and caffeine can also have a negative effect on the absorption of the trace element.

Need for zinc

Nutrition experts and scientists do not agree on the amount of zinc our bodies need every day. Various professional associations recommend the intake of at least 12 mg of zinc per day for women and 15 mg for men. According to these recommendations, infants and small children should take 1 to 2 mg of zinc per day after consulting their doctor. In contrast, the daily requirement for children depends on their age and later also their gender.

A deficiency in this vital trace element often initially triggers very non-specific symptoms. These can include hair loss, poor wound healing, susceptibility to infection, loss of appetite, as well as fertility and growth disorders. Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting are also non-specific possible symptoms in the case of a very significant oversupply of this important trace element. In very high quantities, poisoning cannot be ruled out.

The functions of zinc in the human organism

Zinc is essential for sugar, fat and protein metabolism, among other things. It is also involved in cell growth and the formation of genetic material. The human immune system and a large number of hormones require zinc. The trace element is also a component of certain proteins, which in turn stimulate the formation of various enzymes, among other things.

Functions of zinc

The trace element influences these functions:

Zinc contributes

  • to a normal acid-base metabolism in
  • to a normal carbohydrate metabolism in
  • to normal cognitive function in
  • to normal fertility and normal reproduction in
  • to normal fatty acid metabolism in
  • for the maintenance of normal skin, hair and nails in
  • to maintain normal bones in
  • to maintain normal vision in
  • to a normal function of the immune system in
  • helps protect cells from oxidative stress
  • has a function in cell division

zinc deficiency

One-sided diets can lead to a zinc deficiency. Absorption problems in the intestines, such as those that occur in chronic diarrhea, can also lead to a deficiency. Large-area burns or artificial nutrition are other factors that negatively affect zinc levels. There are also increased requirements, for example during growth phases and in women during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

The non-specific symptoms associated with zinc deficiency make it difficult to detect the deficiency without basic laboratory tests. Zinc deficiency can also lead to reduced sense of taste and hair loss. Skin changes are also associated with the deficiency.

Measuring a potential zinc deficiency

Zinc is very active in the human body and is used up in other substances. Therefore, the total zinc content in the blood plasma can vary greatly during the day. The time of day or the time of the last meal can be decisive for the measurement. However, some other substances are also important for the interpretation of zinc values. One example is the hormone cortisol, which is released during stress. A reduced number of blood cells can also indicate a zinc deficiency.
