What is turmeric?

Curcuma is a genus of plants that belongs to the ginger family. The best-known representative of the approximately 120 species of this genus is without a doubt the turmeric plant (Curcuma longa), which is also known as turmeric. The name curcuma is probably derived from the Arabic term al-krukum (saffron) and indicates the coloring property. This herbaceous perennial can grow to a height of around one meter and is originally native to the tropical regions of South Asia.

In countries such as China or Australia, it is now deliberately cultivated as a crop, while India is one of the main growing areas for the plant. The most important components are the highly branched and cylindrically shaped rhizomes, which are visually reminiscent of ginger. However, the intense yellow-orange coloring of the turmeric rhizomes is characteristic. The rhizome is ground into powder, the spice obtained from it has the characteristic yellow color. It gives off an aromatic smell and tastes spicy with a slightly bitter note.

Tradition & versatile use

It has been proven that turmeric was used as a spice in India around 4000 years ago. For the Indian population, the spice still has a special status because, in addition to its use as a kitchen ingredient, it is also an integral part of Ayurveda teachings. Curcuma came to Europe via the Silk Road around the 13th century. The Venetian trader Marco Polo described the spice in his writings and praised it as an alternative to expensive saffron. Turmeric is primarily known in Western cuisines as a component of curry powder, but has recently also been used as a separate spice. The versatile plant has also been used to dye fabrics for a long time.

Curcumin and other curcuminoids are responsible for the yellowish color and coloring properties of turmeric. Classic turmeric powder contains sugar compounds, proteins, essential oils and around five percent curcumin. As a key ingredient in turmeric, curcumin is also found in numerous dietary supplements.

Application, dosage and important information

Always pay attention to the application recommendations of the respective manufacturer and comply with the recommended consumption amount.

Consciously attach great importance to a healthy, varied and balanced diet, dietary supplements are by no means a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. As a spice, pregnant and breastfeeding women can usually use turmeric for the preparation of curry and other dishes without hesitation. There are currently no meaningful studies on dietary supplements with turmeric that would allow conclusions to be drawn about their use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. For this reason, the curcumin products from our range are not suitable for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

If you are taking blood thinners or other medications, you should consult your doctor before taking curcumin supplements.

Best quality with optimal bioavailability

Curcumin, which is naturally present in turmeric, is fat-soluble, making it difficult for the human body to absorb. For this reason, the bioavailability of natural curcumin is correspondingly low, since it is only absorbed in small amounts in the intestine. Unfortunately, traditional foods are mostly largely ineffective. The high-quality products from our range, on the other hand, have a significantly better bioavailability. The innovative micelle formulation is responsible for this.

This novel micelle technology enables a 185 times higher bioavailability compared to conventional curcumin products. The natural turmeric is specially prepared, with micelles playing an important role. These molecular complexes occur naturally and consist of parts that have an affinity for fat and liquid. They encapsulate the curcumin and allow it to be better absorbed by the intestines.

Not only our turmeric is of the best quality. We use high-quality MSM for our MSM-Curcuma Arthro tablets - because purity is so important with MSM. This is confirmed by multi-stage laboratory analyzes and demanding programs for quality assurance. And of course all ingredients are approved in Switzerland.
