The gut is more than just a digestive tract. It is the largest immune organ in our body and is colonized by billions of bacteria. There are about 100.000.000.000.000 (100 trillion) bacteria that nest on the inner intestinal mucosa and are referred to as "microbial flora". The microbial flora consists of about 400 different species and subspecies - a complex ecological system with important functions.
What harms the intestinal flora?
There are many reasons why the intestinal flora can become unbalanced. These include e.g. B. Environmental toxins, unhealthy diet, smoking, stress, etc. Especially after taking antibiotics for a long time, the number of health-promoting intestinal bacteria can be significantly reduced, because these are often destroyed by antibiotics.
What are so-called “probiotics”?
The term probiotics comes from ancient Greek and means “for life” (pro bios). Probiotics based on lactic acid bacteria have a long tradition. Ilya Metchnikov (Russian immunologist and Nobel Prize winner) already claimed at the beginning of the 20th century that lactic acid bacteria are able to suppress putrefaction processes in the intestine. The lactic acid bacteria are protected in the capsule shell against stomach and bile acids so that they reach the intestines undamaged. They are protected from temperature influences, do not need to be cooled and are therefore also well suited for travel.
