Fatigue and exhaustion - there are ways out
Tiredness and exhaustion - underestimated symptoms and their possible relief
If you feel tired after a hard day, this is completely normal at first. Both physical and mental work demands maximum performance from your body – from which it has to recover through rest and sleep. But what if the desired effect just doesn't happen and tiredness becomes a constant companion?
Always tired and empty - harbingers of exhaustion
Permanent tiredness, which does not go away even after sufficient sleep, is a serious warning signal. If it goes hand in hand with a feeling of weakness and listlessness or emotional emptiness and being overwhelmed, physicians speak of exhaustion.
This condition can have various causes, which occasionally merge or cause each other:
- physical exhaustion
Occurs as a result of physical (over)exertion - for example, because you work hard for a long time or do excessive sport. - mental exhaustion
emanates from the nervous system and expresses itself on a mental or emotional level. Probably the most famous form of mental exhaustion is writer's block.
Physical and mental signs of exhaustion
Both phenomena are accompanied by a number of clear symptoms and can prevail
- Persistent tiredness, even during the day
- unrefreshing, disturbed or restless sleep
- Exhaustion
- Lack of energy and drive
- reduced ability to perform and concentrate
- physical weakness
- emotional lability
- Nervousness and irritability
- Susceptibility to infection
- lack of appetite and lack of libido
- depressive moods
- muscular tension in the neck and back area and the resulting headaches
- ringing in the ears and dizziness
to express.
However, these signs are very non-specific. If you experience one or more of the symptoms mentioned, the cause may be exhaustion – but it can also indicate other illnesses.
Wrong means and their bad end
In this situation, many of those affected resort to “proven” aids and try to combat daytime fatigue with increased coffee consumption and more smoking breaks. In the evening, a glass of wine or beer is said to help you fall asleep, as the body does not rest despite obvious exhaustion.
The consolidation of such rituals is another warning signal and only really heats up the vicious circle of tiredness and exhaustion - because now, in addition to the lack of sleep, there are also hangovers and health risks from caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. The resort to stronger means is obvious and often ends in an interplay of sleeping pills and stimuli.
Escape the exhaustion gently
Instead of interfering with the highly sensitive system of the human organism on your own, you should have the cause of persistent tiredness clarified by a doctor. Apparently big problems are often based on small, easily remedied disturbances such as a lack of nutrients or trace elements.
In this way, taking vital substances can effectively combat persistent tiredness. Among the best-known antidotes of this type are the vitamins of the B complex and iron supplements, as they stimulate the energy metabolism and thus counteract the physical side effects of exhaustion.
Herbal ingredients such as lemon balm, lavender or hops are also popular for tiredness and exhaustion.
You should only use pick-me-ups for a short time or after consulting your doctor. You can selectively increase your performance and attention; but are not a permanent solution in the fight against persistent tiredness and the resulting exhaustion.
